Gas Hazard Management

CEC Combustion Safety offers services to minimize risks related to our industrial and utility customer’s flammable gas piping systems and facilities. Our focus is 6 specific areas of practice as identified below:

1. Facility Audits for Facilities Design, Condition, and Work Practices.
Our firm provides physical condition audits that can be provided from customized protocols. The protocols can screen for installation issues, maintenance practices, operational issues, code compliance, design issues, best practices, and the possibility of applying new technologies that can enhance safety. Audits are applied with a specific process that includes kick off meetings, wrap up meetings, and reporting at sites for immediate safety issues. Web portal reporting and risk assessment and prioritizing of issues are also common services provided.

2. New piping system design review for serviceability and NFPA 54/56 compliance.
Our firm conducts design reviews of piping systems for serviceability issues related to purge points, vent designs and locations, and accommodations for taking systems into and out of service.

3. Personnel training for safe gas handling and work practices.
Human error is the number one cause of accidents. Training can provide the knowledge and skills required to minimize human error. CEC’s approach is to first assess a client’s staff to better understand the level of knowledge they possess prior to our working with them. Targeted training programs can then be applied. Results can be measured post training through additional assessments and skill observations. Our firm has dozens of PowerPoint presentations which require little customizing for a customer’s site. We also have available life size simulator equipment and exercises for providing hands on skills. Our firm can even provide for internal subject matter experts and qualification certifications for those that will direct or participate in piping maintenance or purging operations.

4. Compliance programs for NFPA 54/56.
Our firm provides compliance programs for nationally applicable safety standards related to gas piping systems. This can include the development of corporate governance statements, as well as policies for isolating piping systems and servicing them. These policies and programs usually include the establishment of internal management structures and resources like intranet web sites that make efforts sustainable within large organizations.

5. Corrosion Control Services.
Our firm conducts corrosion control services for underground and above ground piping systems. Corrosion control systems are required for all piping systems. Our work includes detailed corrosion surveys, corrosion monitoring programs, and corrosion review design for new and existing systems.

6. Pipeline commissioning including cleaning, pressure testing, and purging into/out of service.
Our firm provides field labor services including project engineers and technicians for planning and executing pipeline commissioning activities. These activities include defining work to be accomplished, directing contractors, defining services such as Nitrogen and compressed air, determining pressure testing compliance requirements, and then operating the site valves and systems to achieve the desired end results.

There are countless daily stresses and pressures during a gas piping project. That's why proper planning and commitment to safety from the top down is needed to provide the focused disciplined that can make the difference between success and failure. With experts serving on three national code committees, CEC has the knowledge and expertise to start up natural gas piping systems and equipment. CEC can take charge and ensure that all the work is conducted safely and that it is documented to meet your project objectives.
