ATTENTION: Warning Potential Hazard — Immediate action is required to prevent the potential for explosion and fire in your facility.

Our records indicate that you may have at some time purchased Eclipse Veri-Flame flame monitoring controls. The Eclipse Veri-Flame is an electronic control (see picture of current model) typically used on gas fired heating equipment that might be used in your manufacturing process.Eclipse Veri-flame 1

We have found that some Veri-Flames may allow continued gas flow even in the absence of flame. While only a few occurrences have been reported, this situation could pose a significant hazard to personnel and equipment.

See below for attachment #1 “Eclipse Veri-Flame lot identification” for instructions on how to determine if you own Veri-Flames affected by this advisory.
If you have a Veri-Flame in the affected lots;

Conduct visual verification of flame presence on every combustion 1. start-up sequence. If manual verification of system start-up is not an option, the combustion system must be immediately shut down.

Test all affected lots 2. according to the attachment #2 “Eclipse Veri-Flame flame monitoring control test procedure”. This procedure is compliant to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) standard. The NFPA requires a regular inspection of all of your gas fired heating equipment to insure that all Veri-Flame (or equivalent) controls are in sufficient working order. If the test indicates any Veri-Flame (or equivalent control) is not operating, NFPA requires you to immediately shut down the combustion system.

Immediately contact Eclipse 3. (information below). When you call, we will: ask you for the model number, serial number and/or date code, and the results of the test performed in step number two above on all of the Veri-Flames in your possession. We will register your location, and provide you with the latest updates on the advisory.

If you do not have any of the affected Eclipse Veri-Flame units in your possession or use, but have resold them to someone else;
Forward this advisory to your customer immediately1. . Contact Eclipse if you would like assistance with distribution of the advisory. Notify Eclipse2. (information below) with the customer name and contact information of your customer(s) so that we can provide them with timely updates to the advisory.

ATTACHMENT #1

Eclipse Veri-Flame lot identification.
To find out if your specific Veri-Flame(s) is affected by this advisory, look on the back of the unit. On the back of the unit there is an alphanumeric serial number where the first two numeric characters indicate the year of manufacture.
CAUTION: follow appropriate safety procedures in the presence of electrical devices.

  • On newer models (picture, left), there is a “DATE CODE.” The first two numeric characters indicate the • year of manufacture.
  • On other models (picture, right), there is a serial number “S/N” The first two numeric characters • indicates the year of manufacture.

If the first two numeric characters in the serial number or date code are 94,95,96,97,98,99,00,01,02,03, 04,05,06 or 07 then your Veri-Flame is in the affected lot.

However, if the part number on the unit begins with VF561 or VF562, you have a CE version Veri-Flame and it is not in the affected lot.

 

ATTACHMENT #2

Eclipse Veri-Flame flame monitoring control test procedure
This test procedure is designed to check for a false flame signal after the start of the trial for ignition of the burner. Because of the wide variety of system arrangements in which Veri-Flames could be installed, we provide two test procedures below. Find the test that applies to your system arrangement. Only one (1) of these tests is necessary and sufficient to identify the possibility for a hazardous condition.

For these tests, the terminology “no indication of flame” means that the red light inside the test jack is off or the voltage measured from the test jack to terminal S2 or earth ground measures below 1.5VDC. Also, there should be no AC voltage output at either terminal 3 or 5 to the safety shut off valves. Terminal locations are shown on the next page.

I.

On systems equipped with a manual valve that is:
• down-stream of the safety shut off valves that are powered by the Veri-Flame, AND
• down-stream of any limit devices that are inputs to the Veri-Flame, •
(Please see the schematic diagram below for the location of the manual valve on pilot and/or main valve trains)

THEN
• Close the downstream valve. On burners with a pilot, close both main and pilot manual valves.
• The proper response of the Veri-Flame is:
• if the burner is running, it will lose flame and then the Veri-Flame should have no indication of o flame and will de-energize the safety shut off valves.
• If the burner is not running, create a demand to start the burner and the Veri-Flame should not o keep the safety shut off valves open after the end of the trial for ignition. The valves should not remain open for more than 15 seconds. After that time the Veri-Flame should have no indication of flame and it should de-energize the safety shut off valves.
• If the Veri-Flame does not respond properly it failed the test.

II.

If you do not have the manual valve described above, you will need to block the signal of the flame sensor.
• Shut down the burner and remove electrical power from the Veri-Flame. •
• Remove the flame sensor wire from terminal S1 and temporarily insulate the exposed bare wire with electrical tape or a wire nut.
• Restore power and create a demand to start the burner.
• The proper response of the Veri-Flame is:•
• The Veri-Flame should not keep the safety shut off valves open after the end of the trial for o ignition. The valves should not remain open for more than 15 seconds. After that time it should have no indication of flame and de-energize the safety shut off valves.
• If the Veri-Flame does not respond properly it failed the test.

WARNING: Shut the system down if the Veri-Flame does not respond properly.
